If you know me at all, you know that I love to worship God! I do! I love to worship Him in song! My heart songs are songs of worship. I often wake with a song in my heart and mind. I truly believe that my spirit worships Him even while my body sleeps. And oh, how I love to worship in song with other believers! The sound of many voices lifted in praise is a small glimpse of heaven. My favorite group is a group of people who have been delivered from the pits of hell, and they know it. I am one of these, and it’s just simply impossible for us to stand quietly with decorum and worship our Redeemer. Our hands won’t stay by our sides for long, even if we’re not “feeling like” worshiping. I love how Holy Spirit does that. He changes everything. The entire atmosphere when our mouths begin to speak praise.
Worshiping is not just a song thing, however. Many people sing songs of worship, but no actual worship is involved. It’s a heart thing. It’s a knowing God thing. It’s a spiritual thing. Jesus said ““But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”” John 4:23-24 NLT
Jesus is speaking here to the Samaritan woman. The woman at the well. If you don’t know this story, go read it and come on back. This woman came to draw water, and Jesus was waiting for her. It’s one of my favorites. He tells her and us that He is living water for her soul (and ours), and His well never runs dry. We must seek Him over everything in this world and know His truth. Jesus says that God is looking for people who will worship Him in truth. We can’t do that if we don’t know the truth. We need to know the truth about offering our bodies as living sacrifices. We need to know the truth of who God is. We need to know the truth about what He says. We come to know Him through His word and our experiences with Him. When He truly becomes real to us, we can’t help but rejoice in Him. To give thanks to Him. To bow down before Him and honor His name. To shout for joy. To boast about Him. To praise His name. To call on His name. To proclaim His name. To fear His name. To seek His name and sing about The Name of the LORD Most High!
“To worship is to reverence and honor God, to acknowledge Him as worthy of your praise.”
Worshiping Him in Spirit and in truth flows naturally from a follower of Jesus. Holy Spirit leads us into it. He guides us and directs our worship when we surrender and walk in holiness with Him.
Lord, Lead us by Your Spirit to worship You according to Your Word, forgive us, and convict us when we take our eyes off You and just go through the motions. “We want the fullness of Your truth and the fullness of Your Spirit in our lives and in our churches, and we pray for worship that’s marked by both in ways that lead to the spread of Your truth and the power of Your Spirit.
You alone are worthy!
(John 4:24, NLT) But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.
