The Healer of Wounds

A few years back, my oldest daughter Olivia and I were talking about what happens when a person gets “wounded” internally.  With questions like: “What happens when a person tries to heal themselves or use outside sources for healing?” or worse yet, “What happens if the wound goes ignored?” As we were discussing, an understanding came to me by way of explanation on the importance of letting God be the healer of our wounds.

Let’s say you have someone who is afraid of doctors and hospitals, or just think they know better, and they get hurt with a deep gash in their leg. Rather than going to the doctor (who is the one that has all the medical knowledge and resources to heal the wound properly) they just put a bandage on, cover it up and hope it will heal on its own. Over time, their leg becomes very sore and painful to walk on. They begin having trouble completing regular everyday tasks and now notice that overall, they don’t feel very well. The wound is now infected, and the infection has spread through the body.

Now, what areas in your life are affected by not feeling well? Your mood, health, others around you, your job and so on. What do you do now? Inevitably, to live you would need a doctor, right? But now the doctor has a much more extensive process to complete the healing. Such as, possibly reopening the wound to clean it out. Which may have been necessary earlier on but to a smaller less invasive degree, had you visited the doctor when the wound first came about.

Now, how does this transfer to the spiritual? God is our Father yes, but He is also our healer. He knows the innermost parts of us, after all He created us. He knows exactly what we need to heal our wounds that have been inflicted on us. But you cannot allow your fear or pride to keep you from going to Him or allowing Him to draw you in. Many go about trying to live their lives with wounds of trauma, abandonment, rejection, and so much more. Instead of going to their healer, they choose to look for other options for healing or just push them down and ignore them.

Those wounds then begin to affect our lives in all kinds of ways. Such as pride, anger, anxiety, depression and even addiction. They can also impact those connected to you. And once that happens, the process of healing becomes more cumbersome. Once He draws you in and you seek healing in Him, He must go deep down removing the layers that have been built up over the years and “flood” that area with His love, grace, mercy and truth to be truly and fully healed.

Healing is a giant uncomfortable but necessary steppingstone to true freedom, but you must allow the true Healer to work inside of you because He is the only one that can heal you fully.  And because He is the God that gives exceedingly and abundantly, He is also the only one that can teach you how to use His armor to protect yourself from future wounds. And to live unoffendable and with peace that surpasses all understanding. So, run to the Father, and do it again and again and again.

(Psalm 30:2 NIV) LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.
