Finding Confidence in Uncertain Times: Reflections on Hebrews 13:6

In the everyday ins and outs of living, it’s easy to find ourselves contending with uncertainty and fear. Despite the reassurance found in scripture, there are moments when doubts take hold, and we question whether we’re truly walking in faith. As a Christian, I’ve often found solace in the words of Hebrews 13:6, which declares, “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?'” After all, I am a child of the most high God.

Yet, despite knowing this truth intellectually, there have been instances where my confidence wavered, particularly during times of transition and change. One such moment arose when I embarked on a new career path. Despite my best efforts and hard work, a nagging doubt lingered in the back of my mind – a fear of inadequacy, a fear of failure.

These feelings intensified as I approached my six-month review at the new job. Despite my faith in God and His promises, I couldn’t shake off the apprehension regarding the outcome. Would my efforts be recognized? Would I measure up to expectations? These questions loomed large, casting a shadow over my confidence.

However, amid my anxious thoughts, I was reminded of the very scripture that had provided comfort in times of uncertainty. Hebrews 13:6 beckoned me to trust in the Lord’s provision and sovereignty. It challenged me to confront my fears head-on and to give up control, knowing that the Almighty God is my helper.

When the day of my review arrived, I was met with unexpected joy and relief. The feedback I received was not only positive but glowing. At that moment, I was again reminded of the significance of trusting in God’s promises wholeheartedly. It wasn’t merely about the outcome of a performance review but about surrendering my fears and anxieties to Him.

Reflecting on this experience, I’ve come to understand that true confidence in God rises above circumstances. It’s not contingent upon external validation or worldly success. Rather, it’s rooted in the unwavering assurance that God is always by our side, guiding us through life’s twists and turns.

Even in moments of doubt and uncertainty, we can find peace knowing that the Lord is orchestrating our lives according to His divine plan. Whether we face trials or triumphs, His steadfast love remains constant. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

So, as I continue on this journey of faith, I’m learning to embrace Hebrews 13:6 as more than just a verse of reassurance. It’s a call to live boldly and confidently in the knowledge that God is indeed my helper, and with Him, I need not fear the uncertainties of life. Each day is an opportunity to entrust my worries to Him and to walk in the assurance of His unfailing love.

(Hebrews 13:6, NIV) So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”
